Frequently asked questions
Plug-in low-voltage kits that use an existing GFCI-protected outdoor outlet are often installed by homeowners. A new outdoor outlet, a hardwired transformer, line-voltage (120-volt) fixtures or anything near a pool needs an electrician and usually a permit. Low-voltage cable should still be buried and protected from mower and edger damage.
Water intrusion is the usual cause: fixtures without the right wet rating, unsealed connections, cracked lenses or cable nicked by landscaping. Lightning-induced surges can also damage transformers and LED drivers. An electrician can test the circuit, find where moisture gets in and recommend sealed connectors and surge protection.
Yes, with specific rules. Light fixtures, outlets and switches near pools must keep minimum distances from the water and have GFCI protection where required. Plan pool-area lighting with an electrician who does pool work.
LED fixtures use much less power, run cooler and last far longer than halogen lamps, and you can run more lights on one transformer. When replacing old halogen lights, the transformer size and the cable runs are usually checked too.
